As we all know by now, Newsvine is broken down into Nations now. You can be a member of 15 Nations and start discussions and post articles to those 15 Nations.
The threads are now organized so that Nations that you are a member of appear first. This format allows you to converse with people you want to quickly and easily. You can peruse and see how the conversation is going in each Nation and choose which of those conversations you wish to participate in.
After this, you can see other Nations conversations and pick and choose which you want to contribute to. The beauty of this new format is that you don’t have to read every comment from every person to get down to the nitty gritty of what you want to discuss. You can spend less time reading and more time having great, enlightening discussions with folks about what you want to talk about.
This is very different from how Old Newsvine was and I think many are still struggling with this. I think many read the entire comment threads on every article and then get upset when they see violations from admins and other users. This is a fair reaction, but let me try to explain how we hope you will start using the site.
Since your Nations appear first, we urge you to really think about which 15 Nations you join and make sure you enjoy the flow of conversation, the users involved in that conversation, and that nothing being said is offensive to you. I would be very picky in which 15 you choose.
We also urge you to Admin a Nation or two, which everyone has the ability to do and run it in a way you find an enjoyable experience.
If you see a user you don’t like in your Nation: block them. If you are in a Nation and you don’t like the Admin: leave. You don’t need to read every comment in every Nation. Try to nurture the Nations you do enjoy and ignore the ones you don’t.
If everyone left a Nation where an Admin was behaving badly, they would have a Nation of one and it wouldn’t be very exciting for them. If every Admin blocked an offensive user, they would only be able to comment in the public discussion, which is buried deep in the thread. If they wanted their comments seen, they would clean up their act!
The old adage: Do Not Feed the Trolls is very true in this case. Arguing back with these commenters, reporting them to the moderation team, staying in the Nation when you don't like its Admin is feeding the trolls. It's the attention that particular type of user craves!
Instead, create a community of 15 Nations with people you can have meaningful discussions with. Cultivate those relationships and thatr experience. Think about it, folks. It’s vastly different from how the Vine used to be run, but it’s very exciting and as a user, I’ve been really enjoying only paying attention to the Nations that I like!
I urge everyone to let this simmer in your minds for a bit. Try it out. Then let me know how it goes!
