This Best Of is going to be a little different, for the simple fact that I am taking it over this week while Dave is out of town, and I am different than he is. I will try to do my best to replace the Best Of master.
In order to bring more light to the best of Newsvine and moderated comments here (also on NBCNews.com, Today.com and in Newsvine Nation comments on MSNBC.com) here is this week’s Best of Newsvine. This is a curated list of articles, seeds, photo/video posts and comments for the past week.
This series will combine the use of Newsvine's "thumbs up" as well as the minds of the Newsvine team. As always, meta articles about the proper use of the site will be ignored for this feature. Those tend to get both the most upvotes, as well as the most flags.
original writing on Newsvine
Also, just in case anyone missed Neale Osborne's obituary article last week, "In Loving Memory of Neale Osborne", I am re-posting it. This was quite a loss to the Newsvine community and Marshall James did an excellent job on this piece.
EDIT: I removed my praise of Hoppin' John. Turns out it was plagiarized from another source and not cited. Not good.
shared content that inspires conversation and learning
NY Peach seeded a very unique article, "The Only Comment on Dylann Roof's Facebook Photo Will Bring You To Tears", discussing that after the tragedy, an African American gospel singer who had been shot 8 times in the past wrote Roof a touching message about forgiveness.
Eagle Avarro posted an interesting seed about the Kennewick Man and the debate as to whether or not he is an ancestor of modern Native Americans, entitled "To Be or Not To Be - DNA reignites Kennewick Man Debate."
Lastly, Patriot 8888, seeding an article on "Why America is Attracted to Donald Trump", which is claiming it's for his unwavering patriotism and love of America. It's worth a read.
show, don’t tell
Effie posted two photographs this week that really impressed me.
I love how the subject of the photo is mainly focused on the bottom half of it, and the rest is just blue sky with one lone star.
I can't believe how close to this honey bee this shot is.
insight, wisdom, laughs
Kent Salsby wrote a very polite rebuttal on an article of Soph's, entitled "How OBVIOUS does it have to be before the Right Wing accept there is a problem?" The article is regarding the shooting in Charleston this week and the discussion started by Kent Salsby is a great example of what Newsvine discussions can be like when we respect each other, even though our viewpoints may not be the same, and have a polite and educated debate.
In fact, I was so impressed by this entire comment thread, I urge you to read through it all.
Tip of the Week: I'm going to leave you all with this quote from Romain Rolland.
“Discussion is impossible with someone who claims not to seek the truth, but already to possess it.”
So who's going to make next week's Best Of? What did we miss?
